The Life & Legacy of Larry Whidden
About the Artist
Yale O'Leary Whidden, known as Larry Whidden, was a prominent figure in metal sculpture, celebrated both locally and internationally for his expressive creations.
Born on July 27, 1940, in Tampa, Florida, Larry's journey into art began unexpectedly after a personal tragedy in 1973, leading him from a career at Tampa International Airport to becoming a self-taught metal sculptor. His art, recognized in numerous publications and awarded various honors, reflects a deep emotional and creative process. Throughout his career, Larry's contributions to the art world were celebrated in numerous newspapers and magazines, alongside a collection of awards that highlighted his artistic excellence.
A stalwart member of both the Pasco and Hernando Fine Arts Councils, his legacy includes the founding of significant local cultural events such as the Masaryktown Art Festival, the Crews Lake Art Festival, the Aripeka Arts Festival, and notably, Art in the Park in Brooksville. These festivals have not only enriched the cultural tapestry of the region but also served as platforms for artists to showcase their talents. In addition to his artistic achievements, Larry dedicated himself to public service in Pasco County and was known for his robust work ethic and passion for making a difference. An avid sailor and reader, he explored various philosophies and world religions, adding depth to his artistic expression.
Larry Whidden's legacy is one of creativity, community, and inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on the Hernando County art community and beyond. His life's work continues to influence and inspire, as we honor his memory and contributions to the arts.
